The yellow wire is for the fan RPM (rotations per minute) signal. So essentially a speed singnal. A fan uses the yellow wire to report its rotation speed back to the motherboard so that your motherboard / fan software or BIOS can display that number, so you know how fast the fan spins. The problem with this splitter is that it has 2 yellow wires, so two fans will report their speed on the yellow wire on the same connector to the motherboard. This means of course that you will get a crazy/wrong number for RPM on the header on the motherboard where this cable is plugged in. So it is recommended to cut one yellow wire and let just one of the fans report the RPM. If the fans are the same, you will know they are both spinning at the same speed.
